The Death of Constance Perris - Founder Member of the Moseley Forum

Constance Perris Contance Perris - one of the Founding Members of the Moseley Forum - has died.

Constance was a strong & caring person, full of integrity, who worked very long & hard for Moseley Forum - battling through long illness without any complaint - contributing a vast amount to the success of the activities of the Forum and other local community groups, but finally succumbed in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the morning of Thursday, 22nd April, 2010.

She will leave a massive hole in the management committee of Moseley Forum and will be very sadly missed by everyone from the Forum, as well as all of those who met her over the years.

The cremation service will be held at Lodge Hill on Friday 7th May at 3.30pm. People who knew her will be welcome. There will be no reception.

No flowers, but if people wish to make a donation, we are asked by her daughter to consider Cancer Research UK

We would welcome any comments from any & all local residents and former colleagues, who knew Constance well, to submit their thoughts to be published on this site with this article, (if desired), and also to be passed on to her family.

Please e-mail your thoughts to the chair: Esther Boyd, or to the website administrator: Nasar, or via clicking on the 'add new comment' below.

BANF - Birmingham Association of Neighbourhood Forums - to be wound up?

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
15 SEPTEMBER at 19:30
Rooms 3 + 4 Council House

Purpose of meeting to consider the resolution:
"This meeting agrees to dissolve the Birmingham Association of Neighbourhood Forums and to wind up BANF as a company limited by guarantee".

At present BANF has no confirmed income to meet future liabilities so it has no alternative but to initiate steps to close down.

Please lobby BeBirmingham and local councillors - try to prevent the closure - find out what is planned to replace the service provided by BANF.

Councillor Martin Mullaney responded promptly to my concern on receiving notice of the SGM. He reassures Moseley Forum that our grant from the City Council is not at risk.

Moseley Forum AGM 2009

The 2009 Annual General Meeting of Moseley Forum was held on Tuesday, 12th May at St Columba's Church Hall on the corner of the Alcester Road and Chantry Road in Moseley.

After the normal A.G.M. business was sorted out in short order - presentiing accounts and the Chair's report - the public meeting went straight into dealing with the subject of 'Introducing Shared Space in Moseley'.

Our guest speaker this year is Paola Spivach B.Sc. M.A. Arch., an associate at Hamilton-Baillie Associates Ltd, the Bristol-based consultancy that has pioneered the application of Shared Space principals in the U.K. and in Europe.

For more informaiton about our speaker and about shared space visit the Hamiliton Baillie Associates website. A short video illustrating the use of shared space in Europe is availible online:

Moseley Forum appoints first Communications Officer

Moseley Forum, the neighborhood forum for Moseley, has appointed its first communications officer to help raise the profile of the organisation and to involve more local people in the work of the forum.

The forum, managed entirely by volunteers, works to have a positive influence on local issues and improve the area for the benefit of residents.

David Butlin joins the team as communications officer on a part-time voluntary basis working a few hours each week, as and when the Moseley Forum committee requires. He was appointed at February’s monthly Moseley Forum Committee meeting on February 2 at St Columba Church, Moseley.

David said: “I am delighted to be appointed and to be able to get involved in local issues. It’s a way of making a positive contribution to Moseley as well as learning some new things and meeting some new people.”

The Moseley Forum management committee is currently made up of eleven volunteers who work across the areas of community safety, health and social issues, regeneration, housing and transport. The forum has a dedicated sub-committee, SusMo, that deals with environmental and sustainability issues.

Moseley Forum set up Moseley’s FARMA award winning monthly farmers market and the annual Moseley Festival and also instigated Moseley’s involvement in the Britain in Bloom competition, all of which have gone on to be successful, self-managed and self-sustaining projects in their own right.

The next committee meeting is on Monday 6 April St Columba Church at 7.30pm. Local residents are welcome to attend.

Public Meetings on improvements to streets and transport in Moseley

Moseley Forum is holding two public meetings about transport and traffic in Moseley.

August 10th: ITV programme 'Tales from the Country' features Moseley Village

In July 2007 an ITV film crew came to Moseley to film Moseley on Farmers' Market and Arts Market day, for a programme about 'Urban Villages' in the series
'Tales from the Country'.

This will be shown on
Sunday August 10th
probably at 18:00, but it is worth checking TV listings.

The first half of the programme is about Stoke Newington, which also holds a Farmers' Market.

Moseley Road Baths, SusMo, the Ent and many other Moseley matters are also featured.

A boost to shopping in Moseley

On Saturday, 26th April, a new shop opened in Moseley - Indigo Wholefoods - that shall fill the void left by the departure of Sage Wholefoods late last year. Indigo is based on St Mary's Row in what was the Retro Bizarre shop.

It was in fact set up by three of the founder members of the original Sage Wholefoods Co-operative - George Howell, Jane Howell, and Henrietta Lockhart - Indigo though is being run as a private enterprise.

Indigo Wholefoods is based on the principles of being:

  • ethical
  • friendly
  • knowledgeable
  • dedicated to Moseley
  • passionate about natural products

This is a boost to the day-time economy that has sadly been in decline over the past few years.
